Following the U. Supreme court ruling in Brown V. Board of Education, desegregation was left to individual states and often individual counties to comply with the ruling. In June of that year, learning institutes in the mountain state began the process of desegregation. That year the brand new DuBois building was integrated with black and white students and given a new name — Mount Hope High School.
Evansmore says things took a turn after DuBois became Mount Hope. While segregation in the Mountain State never led to the violence seen elsewhere in America, Evansmore- who now is the director of a small museum dedicated to Dubois history- recalls unjust times that hurt just as bad.
DuBois produced a number of great scholars and leaders. The all-black school was also home to a great football program.
Fayette County serves students at their doorstep
Football boys got along because it was accepted that black football players were better than the white football players and that showed up in the results in the following years when Mt. Black students were allowed to play on the football and basketball teams but some students would never see those Friday night lights the same way again.
African-American boys could play sports, but other high school mainstays like band, clubs and even the arts — took much longer. It took West Virginia almost a decade for its schools to become completely desegregated. For many, closing the African-American schools left a loss of community identity for black West Virginians. The school closings, which the Fayette board approved in May, will leave the county with three high schools and would close a few schools on borders with other counties. Meadow Bridge High supporters have fought to save that school from past consolidation proposals supported by the state board. These supporters consistently showed up to state board meetings in Charleston.
State board member Miller Hall, of Raleigh County, made the motion Wednesday to approve all proposed closures but the one for Meadow Bridge High, citing student transportation concerns. Libby Akers, a resident of the Montgomery area and a graduate of Valley High, said she expects the next step will be for Valley High supporters to talk to a lawyer. She said she plans to sue. Among those in the standing-room-only crowd were people wearing the colors of Valley High and Meadow Bridge High. All nine voting members of the state board were in attendance Wednesday. After about a minute break in the meeting, following public speakers, a presentation from Fayette schools Superintendent Terry George and state board member questions about the consolidation plan, the board members approved all closures except Meadow Bridge High in a voice vote.
This was the final state school board or School Building Authority sign-off that George said was needed for the far-reaching consolidation plan to progress. The county still may ask the state to approve closing Ansted and Divide elementaries. Savings from closing schools are supposed to pay down the loan.
